1/3/2018 This Politician Wants To Eliminate All Of Mexico's Crime. His Plan To Do It Has People Livid.Read NowAndres Manuel Lopez Obrador is currently the leading candidate for Mexico's presidency, but his latest proposition may lead to a change of heart from voters...Overview
With presidential elections coming up this November in Mexico, competition for voters has just begun, and all possible candidates are racing to win votes. The president of the National Regeneration Movement in Mexico, Andres Manuel Lopez-Obrador, is currently in the lead, with an 84% approval rating. Recently, Lopez-Obrador made a controversial proposal in Guerrero state, claiming that he would "eradicate violence three years into his mandate". This is a bold statement, made in a very poorly chosen setting, as Guerroro state has been the hardest hit during a drug war "that has claimed an estimated 200,000 lives since 2006". Additionally, he proposed giving amnesty to drug criminals, which was met with public opposition, and a open letter from poet Javier Sicilia. In his letter, Sicilia writes "[how]Can you ask a country where criminals continue killing, disappearing people, extorting, because official corruption has given them a free pass to impunity, to forget?”. Fellow candidates also called Lopez-Obrador out, such as José Antonio Meade, who claims he's “on the side of the victims, not of the victimizers", and Margarita Zavala, who tweeted "should she win, she would build a 'special prison for corrupt people and criminals'. This race for the presidency has already claimed the lives of 6 candidates at the hands of cartels, and fear of being targeted may have well been a motivator behind Lopez-Obradors' proposal. The race has only begun, and it is all or nothing for the remaining candidates. But the price may well be their lives. SOAPSTone Analysis
10/5/2017 "It's Not Murder If They Are Black".....Racist Threats Posted Online Towards Students at Howard University.Read NowJohn Edgar Rust, 26, posted online threats on 4chan, claiming that "Any niggers left at Howard University after 10 tomorrow will be first to go" Article Written By Tasneem Nashrulla.Overview
Many classes were cancelled at Howard University after a threat was posted on November 11, 2015, announcing that any students on-campus after 10 would be killed. The threat was posted by John Edgar Rust, a 26-year-old male, from a Panera Restaurant at around 7:28 pm. Rust is registered as a sex offender, and he now faces up to 5 years in prison for the online threat. In the 4chan post, Rust writes "So I've decided. Any niggers left at Howard University after 10 pm will be the first to go. And any of those cheapskate niggers who try to get out using the metro will regret that choice real fast. Sure, the po po will take me down, but I'll get out a hero knowing I made the world better". The threat frightened both administrators and students at the school, which led to classes cancelled and 48 hour on-campus police, along with an FBI investigation that led to Rust. Author's Diction The author's choice of words creates a concerned tone, but it also reveals that she finds this message repulsive, and is happy with the arrest of Rust for his racist and threatening post. The author also uses images of the post itself, and adds the fact that Rust is a sex offender, as a way of showing that he has a previous criminal record, and that he was in violation of his probation for using the internet in the first place. Rhetorical Devices Used By The Author The author appeals the most to pathos by creating a very negative background for Rust. She points out that he was previously charged as a sex offender, and that his use of the internet alone violated his probation. She also posts the threat that Rust sent, as a way of showing his tone and diction, and to further emphasize his words. In addition, the title of the article itself is a quote taken from the post, so that the first thing a reade notices is the foul language used by Rust, and his cruel intentions. All of these things combined create a very hateful feeling towards Rust, and makes the reader feel outraged and satisfied that Rust is now behind bars. Author's Tone The author has a indignant tone towards this topic, and she emphasizes it through her use of evidence, images, and word choice. The author keeps a neutral feeling about the way that the case was handled, but points out Rust's previous criminal record several times throughout the article. She also mentions that he had visited sites and downloaded articles on how to murder a person and how to create explosive devices. This all makes for a hostile and indignant tone, and a clear sense of disgust at Rust's actions. The author clearly feels strongly about this topic, and is trying to make the reader feel the same way through her tone. Author's Purpose The author's purpose is to inform the reader of the cruel and racist comments made to the student body of Howard University, and the steps taken to find the man responsible, and who exactly that man was. She does not intentionally try to persuade the reader to believe anything, rather she is stating facts about the events that took place. However, there is also a very negative background placed against Rust, which does not help him, but instead makes him look worse than he already does. It makes her purpose a bit more biased, even though Rust's acts are inexcusable. Her purpose is not a bad one, but it is a biased one. 10/3/2017 Mass Shootings are Dominating Headlines...But How Come We Know So Little About Them?Read NowAt least 59 dead and 527 wounded after mass shooting at the Route 91 Harvest Festival.....Article Written by Peter AldhousOverview of Las Vegas Shooting
Stephen Paddock, 64, opened fire at the Route 91 Harvest Festival on October 1st, killing at least 59 people and injuring 527 others. FBI agents stormed the hotel from which he was shooting and found Paddock dead after he alledgedly took his own life. The motive for the shooting is still unknown, and police investigations are under way. Paddock had a total 23 firearms in his hotel room in Mandalay Bay Hotel, most of which were automatic, or altered to fire like one. ISIS has claimed responsiblilty of the attack, saying that they influenced Paddock in the first place. However, the FBI has determined that no international terrorist group was involved in the events that occured Sunday night. Why Are Mass Shootings On the Rise? As more and more of these mass shootings take over headlines, many start to wonder why there isn't more being done to stop events like these from happening in the first place. The reason: We don't know how. In Australia, after a shooting in Port Arthur, Tasmania, 1996, the government banned firearms such as "pump-action shotguns and semi-automatic rifles". This resulted in a decade in which there were no shootings where 5 or more people were shot and killed. However, weapons that were already in circulation were also bought back at market price from those who had purchased them. In the U.S, an assault weapons ban was also placed on weapons that were being made to reduce the amount of ammo that could go in a weapon. But it did nothing for weapons that were already in circulation. In addition, following the shooting at Sandy Hooks Elementary in Newtown, Conneticut, experts at John Hopkins recommended a new, "carefully crafted" weapons ban, along with a ban on high capacity clips. This advice was not followed, and Daniel Webster, head of the Center for Gun Policy and Reaserch, told BuzzFeed News "I can't say I'm optimistic" about whether the U.S would begin to crack down on gun policy. Many would argue that this is our problem, as the U.S is not willing to compromise or change the current gun policy we have today. Author's Diction The author clearly feels very passionate about the subject of gun policy in the United States and how that contributes to the rising number of mass shootings in recent years. However, he does not seem to have a very personal connection with the incident, besides the feeling of resilience against the shooter and support towards the families and loved ones of those killed in the shootings. The authors choice of words reveals a judgmental tone towards the steps being taken to prevent these mass shootings. He seems to feel that not enough is being done, and that the cultural and political opinions of people play a role in why we don't crack down on gun control Rhetorical Devices Used by the Author The author appeals the most to logos through the use of graphs depicting the number of deaths caused by mass shootings, studies conducted by well known institutes on gun control, and the steps taken by other countries and the effects that they had on mass shootings over a prolonged period of time. For example, the author refers to a study conducted by John Hopkins a few weeks after the Sandy Hooks Elementary shooting, and came to the conclusion that a ban on high capacity clips and enforcing gun control laws was key in preventing mass shootings. In Australia, similar measures were taken and resulted in a decade of no mass shootings. These were all examples given in the article, which are not only credible, but also use research conducted by professionals. Author's Tone The author projects a judgemental tone. which is supported by his choice of words and his opinion on what the measures that are being taken by the government should and should not be. He points out previous mass shootings as if to show that little has been done to prevent these events, and his use of logos supports his claim. He also points out all the negative things that are being done and their effects, while omitting anything good that has been attempted. Author's Purpose The purpose of the author is to persuade the reader that change in gun policy is not only possible, but also necessary if we are to prevent tragic events like th shootings at the Route 91 Harvest Festival. It is trying to convince the reader to see that the way of handling these situations is from the roots, rather than just isolating those that we consider a threat. A homemade bomb was detonated on Parsons Green station in a tube train, injuring 29 people. Some were impacted by sharpnel, others were injured by the crowd trying to escape the train. The bomb did not fully explode, instead causing a fire on the train. Police were called at around 8:20 to the scene. UK Prime Minister Theresa May stated that the terror threat level had been raised to "critical", and also warned that another attack "may be imminent". President Trump suggested that this may have been directed to Scotland Yard. He also preceeded with calling the terrorist a "loser", and deeming the attacks a "terrible thing". While there were injuries, no one was in critical condition. It is believed that the majority of the injuries were flashburns. Officials are asking people to steer clear of the area, and investigations are on the way to catch the individual responsible. Author's Diction The authors' do not have a particular choice of words that give away any emotional thoughts they might have on the attack, meaning that they nay not have a strong emotional attachment, even though they are still concerned. However, many of the contributors to this article do seem to have a very annoyed tone towards Pres. Trump's tweets, and they also seem to back Prime Minister Theresa May in her decisions and comments. Rhetorical Devices Used by the Author The authors' seem to appeal to all 3 of the rhetorical devices. They have images of maps that show where the investigation has led and where arrests and seraches have taken place. They also have screenshots of the tweets made by U.S officials, videos of conferences, and images of police reports that were released to the public. In order to appeal to pathos, they reach out to those affected and their families to show support. Lastly, their appeal to ethos is the use of several different credible sources, as well as numerous contributors and live updates of the ongoing investigation. Author's Tone The authors of this article have a didactic and judgmental tone. They explain the situation to the reader in a well-informed manner, with plenty of data to back up their claims. The are also judgmental, and seem to display their opinion towards the actions taken by government officials in both the U.S and the U.K. Author's Purpose The purpose of this article is to inform the reader about the ongoing terror attacks in London, and what precautions are being taken by both the government and the public. They are also keeping up with the attacks and updating to let the reader know about any arrests, searches, or protests in connection with the attacks. Comments made by government officials are provided, as well as any social media posts and/or press conferences they may have given. This is an article that keeps the public updated on all the events happening in connection with the terror attacks on the Parsons Green train in London. |
